Socket Graft

Socket graft at time of extraction

socket-graftThis procedure is done to minimise the bone loss from a difficult extraction procedure. Scientific studies with some products have shown that if you fill an extraction socket with bone, typically a xenograft (sterilised bone derived from another specie to the host) this fills the socket, acts as a scaffold,  and maintains the bone volume, thus reducing the natural bone shrinking that occurs without the bone graft. Your dentist may recommend such a procedure if there is concern about the bone volume.

If you are thinking about a dental implant soon after an extraction ask your dentist if a socket graft is advisable to preserve your bone.
